Doskonały, bardzo ciężki, wydany na początku 1970 roku debiutancki LP nagrany przez byłego gitarzystę Other Half i Blue Cheer (z genialnej, drugiej strony LP "New! In 1969, Holden, fresh off his tenure with proto-metal pioneers Blue Cheer (appearing on one side of the New! Improved! “I wanted to do something that hadn’t been done before,” Holden explains. “I was interested in discordant sounds that could be melodic but gigantically huge. I rented an Opera house for rehearsal, set up with 16 Sunn amps. That’s what I was going for, way over the top.”
And over the top it is. The 6-song album delves into leaden sludge, lumbering doom and epic soaring riffs that sound free from all constraints of the era. It’s incredibly heavy, but infused with a melodic, albeit mechanistic, sensibility.
“At the time, I was hearing these crazy melodies everywhere I went,” Holden says. “I thought I was going crazy.” For example, one day he slowly rooted out a powerful sound that had been nagging him and discovered it coming from a ceiling fan. “Machinery all around us doesn’t turn in a perfect rhythm. That’s what I was tuning into, I heard the music and the sounds through the machinery. It was perfect for rendering the machine we built.”
Troubles with the album’s release bankrupted Holden, who subsequently left music for over two decades. It was bootlegged several times over the years, but until now hasn’t seen a proper remaster and has yet to be available on digital platforms. “The original mastering just destroyed the dynamics of it,” Holden says. “They flattened it out. Now we got a really nice remaster that should be the closest thing to the original recording.”

To jest jeden z najlepszych gitarowych albumów wszech czasów! Doskonały, bardzo ciężki, wydany na początku 1970 roku debiutancki LP nagrany przez byłego gitarzystę Other Half i Blue Cheer (z genialnej, drugiej strony LP "New! Wydany w 1976 roku własnym sumptem (na wytwórni Sea Side) i zarejestrowany podczas występu w małej sali longplay zawierał pięć dość rozbudowanych kompozycji trwających 6-9 minut i wciągał mroczną surowością i niepohamowaną mocą grania charakterystycznego bardziej dla lat 1971-1972 niż 1976! To jest gęste, oparte na ciężkich, mocarnych riffach, nieco psychodeliczne, czasem zdecydowanie progresywne granie na dwie gitary prowadzące (z raczej przeciętnymi, ale zdecydowanie akceptowalnymi wokalami) bez wątpienia zainspirowane stylistyką wczesnych Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, a zwłaszcza Blues Creation (z 1971 roku), gdzie przesterowana gitara, zdecydowany bas i energiczna perkusja tworzyły niemal hipnotyczny, ale ożywczy klimat. To jest naprawdę świetny album, który w oryginalnej, japońskiej wersji kosztuje 600-700 euro!

At the beginning of the 1970s, Epitaph was on the direct road to success: The band had a record deal with the US label Billingsgate in the bag, played - as the first West German rock band ever - an extensive tour through the USA, and "Outside The Law", their 1973 album produced in Chicago, achieved excellent sales.

The future seemed promising. But Billingsgate got into financial trouble, dragging the band into the maelstrom in 1974, so Epitaph took some time off. The merry-go-round of personnel changed and when the band went on tour with the Hungarian prog rockers Omega in 1978, the new line-up was in place and with Brain (Metronome) the new label partner was found. "Return To Reality" (1979) achieved considerable sales, a year later on "See You In Alaska" (1980) the band presented itself as a four-piece again and on the legendary "Live" (1981) the Epitaph typical twin guitars dominated again.

"Live" is available here for the first time in digitalized form and also on CD. The conclusion of this Epitaph time travel is the album "Danger Man", released in 1982 on the German Rockport label. The box comes with a 16-page booklet and plenty of bonus material.
